  • Abstract: This is a randomized controlled trial to measure the efficacy of alternative preschool language and literacy curricula in public school pre-K and HeadStart classrooms in Montgomery County, MD. Specifically, Building Language for Literacy (BLL), authored by Newman & Snow, is being compared to the public school curriculum. In addition, two levels of coaching support - weekly versus monthly-- for implementing the BLL curriculum are being evaluated. A total of 49 classrooms are being studied over 2 years. Outcome measures include classroom observations, child assessments on standardized tests of reading, early literacy, and school readiness, as well as "What I Think of School". Children will be followed from kindergarten through the end of second grade.
